For one night, the halls of Central Elementary were transformed from an ordinary school building into a sprawling, Minecraft-themed art show that brought together hundreds of students, parents, and community members.

The art show was the culmination of months of hard work and artistic exploration. The theme bridges students’ personal interests and their creative expression in the classroom.

“By using a Minecraft theme, their creations feel like they belong inside a space they already love and recognize,” said Staci Smith, Central Elementary PTA President-Elect. “The transformation of the space into a pixel-inspired world—combined with the wide variety of student artwork—created an experience that felt both imaginative and highly engaging.”

A Collaboration of Creativity

Central’s annual art show is the result of a strong partnership among the school, the PTA, and the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program.

“Our PTA plays a huge role in making this possible, putting in an incredible amount of time and effort to transform the gymnasium into a truly magical space,” said Jana Wiltbank, counselor at Central Elementary. “With this year’s Minecraft theme, they have been hard at work for the past several weeks to create an exciting and memorable experience for our students.”

“For us in the PTA, this art show is truly a labor of love—we spend months helping bring art into classrooms,” said Smith. “This one night is where it all comes to life in the most magical way.”

The gymnasium was filled with various student-made artworks, ranging from 2D sketches to 3D builds, all inspired by the iconic blocky aesthetic of Minecraft. Beyond just viewing the art, attendees could participate in themed activities and meet local guest artists who visited to inspire the next generation of creators.

It’s more than just an art show. Each year the school selects a different theme that is designed to engage students, inspire art, and incorporate fun, interactive activities. Guest artists also visited and shared their work.

Impact on Student Confidence

For student-artists, the show is more than an exhibition; it’s a moment to feel seen and capable as they share their talents with friends and family.

“It makes me proud to see my own work displayed, and I love seeing all the incredible art my classmates create," said Finn Gagon, a sixth-grader.

“This art show gives students a powerful sense of ownership, confidence, and pride in their work,” said Smith. “It validates their creativity as something worth celebrating publicly, while also helping them see connections between art, self-expression, and design.”

“Students build confidence as they see their work displayed and receive recognition in a fun and engaging way," added Wiltbank.

Strengthening the School Community

Beyond individual growth, the art show serves as a vital community-building event for students and their families.

“I love our annual art show at Central Elementary because it gives everyone a chance to showcase the artwork they’ve worked so hard on all year," said Gagon.

“Experiences like this don’t just showcase talent—they help students feel seen, capable, and inspired to keep creating as they step into a world to experience meaningful connections alongside their friends, family, and classmates,” said Smith.

As the pixels are cleared away and the school returned to its normal routine, the impact of the Minecraft Art Show remains. It served as a vibrant reminder that when schools, parents, and community programs collaborate, they can build something truly extraordinary—one block at a time.
